Matthew and Lindsey's Wedding Quilt

Last month a sweet couple got all hitched up, and now I can finally give them their wedding present. I took forever in deciding which quilt to give them, and once I thought I'd decided but then at the 11th hour, I changed my mind. I really should have had this all done prior to the wedding - I definitely had plenty of time. I was just so indecisive!

I shopped the quilt closet here in the quilting room for this gift. I made the pinwheel quilt using a Thimbleberries pattern. This quilt is small-ish; I will refer to it as a nice picnic quilt or a back-of-the-couch quilt.

I used two fabrics and pieced the backing. I have always loved this little quilt top, and now it will go to live with two happy newlyweds. I hope they will love it, too.

I finished the binding Saturday night. Later today, my friend Cheryl, the mother of the groom, will stop by to pick it up for delivery to the couple.

Today is sewing with Sharon! I have a little project to finish for Christmas and I hope to continue working on the December UFO - those Kaffe Fassett tumblers. It will possibly be getting its borders today! woo-hoo!

The Original Pinwheel Quilt

A week or so ago, I shared here the blue and green pinwheel quilt I made from a Thimbleberries pattern. (I have been meaning to tell you what book this quilt was in, but I can't find it. Buried most likely in the sewing room.)

Well, Grandma made this quilt for my sister Sandy 10 or 12 years ago, I would guess. When I was at Sandy's on Thanksgiving, we took a moment to get this picture.

Sandy has always had a fondness for red and white, and asked Grandma to make this for her. It is wonderfully soft and loved - it was delightful to spread out on the bed. Washed and used - the best kind of quilt!

My thanks for November 24:
I am grateful for my several groups of girls I regularly hang out with. Frienzies (Kay, Sharon, Sherrie, Pam, Lyn, Susan and Hettie), Book Club (Vickie, Marlise, Wendy, Sharon, Debbie, and Kelly), Card Club (Dorothy, Cheryl, Sally, Mindy, and Rhonda), Frankfort Girls (Sharon, Sheryll, Terry and JoAnn) and Y-Gradale, a group with a large membership. The fellowship I enjoy with these women is priceless.

Pinwheel Quilt

I had hoped to finish the pinwheel quilt on Monday when we all sewed at Sherrie's house. Alas, I did not.

I did, however, get back to work on it Tuesday here at home, and I finished it in just an hour or two.

It is a rather small quilt, and I should have paid better attention to that. I have plenty of fabric remaining - I could so easily have made it a row wider and a row longer. Oh well, it's done, and I am pleased with it. The pic above looks washed out because the sun was shining in behind it.

I don't think I've ever made a Thimbleberries pattern that has dissatisfied me, come to think of it. All of her patterns are well written and easy to follow.

I did make a small boo-boo. I was just rolling right along adding those borders without a thought. When I picked up all my stuff, there were 4 extra pinwheels. What?? How could I have miscounted those?? Well, a quick check of the pattern and those four pinwheels were supposed to go in the border corners. Duh. Now I have these extra pinwheel blocks to use somehow. I will figure something out. Just give me time.

This is the quilt in the book. Hers is a Christmas-themed quilt in 3 fabrics. I used 4 fabrics in my version.

And, of course, this is the book in which the pattern is located.

My thanks for November 15:
I am thankful for my siblings. I am the oldest of 5, and I have such wonderful childhood memories with them. I always look forward to holiday get-togethers.

Veterans' Day SWF

Because some of those in the Frienzie group are still teaching (i.e. have yet to retire), we have for many, many years used the Veterans' Day holiday for a long day of sewing. Sherrie has been our hostess, oh, these many years, and that's where I'll be today, stitching away on my blue and green pinwheel quilt. In the early years, we went with the intent of staying all night, sewing all night. It wasn't too many years, though, that we decided we were just not cut out for such stuff any more, so we end at a reasonable hour in the evening.

Here are the pinwheels I will be making. I just couldn't resist. I had to make a couple just to see what they'd look like. I am going to like this, I do believe!

 

 

Here are all my parts! Ready to go! Can I get the entire top made in one day? I hope so!

I promise to take pictures of everyone's projects. Some will be scrapping instead of sewing, others come along just to iron or "unsew" or whatever someone might need. It's all about the fellowship, mostly. (Well, there will be a fair amount of eating, too!) These girls are as dear as sisters to me, and we just don't get to see one another as often as we did when we were all still working in the same building.

Decision Made

Finally, I have made a decision on which quilt to start next. When a quilter has a significant stash  and patterns galore from which to choose, making a decision is a big deal! I have a history of being indecisive, too.

When in doubt, I seem to always follow the same path -- Thimbleberries. I have had this quilt on my goals list for 2012, have had the fabrics pulled and stored in a bin with the book, so it appears to be a no-brainer that I get this quilt cut out and started.

Coming up on Monday is our annual Veterans' Day quilting retreat at Frienzie Sherrie's house in Chillicothe. She has hosted us for a good many years now, and I will take this quilt to work on for the day. My plan is to get it cut out today and/or tomorrow. And sew it all on Monday.

Hope my sciatic nerve plays nice between now and then. So far, I think I am improving with the prescribed meds. Keeping fingers crossed!!
