Another Larkspur Quilt

 I don't suppose y'all are getting tired of seeing quilt tops made with Larkspur fabric? I finished up my second one on Thursday while Sharon was here for sewing.

Both Sharon and I had rather hefty collections of Larkspur by 3Sisters/Moda. We determined back in May to make quilts using this luscious fabric. We did that and we both still had a significant amount of remaining fabric, so each of us has now made a second quilt top.

My latest is just plain Larkspur 9-Patch - not very original, but I know what I am talking about when I refer to it, at least.

My Larkspur Stars required random 3.5-inch squares and 3.5-inch HSTs. Consequently, I had a hefty little stack of each left over. Rather than to let them go to waste, I used the squares with a piece of neutral and made  9-inch 9-patch blocks. I had two light fabrics that I cut for setting blocks. I also had a good amount of coral that I used for setting triangles and corner triangles - I like how the coral serves to border the quilt. 

Believe it or not, I still have Larkspur fabric remaining. I have used the HSTs to make a sweet little quilt that will serve nicely as a table topper. I quilted this little quilt Thursday evening and stitched the binding down Friday morning when the Frankfort Girls met.

This is Sharon O's (a different Sharon!) dining room table. She brought out some of her pretty pottery to accent my little quilt. Below see it at my house on the mantel.

It sure has been fun to sew with this beautiful fabric. I still have some, and a couple of pieces are rather large for having made 2 quilt tops and a table topper. I am not sure what I will do with this remaining bit. 

This next week is the last week of summer for me as I go back to class on the 24th. I feel like I have so much to get done before then. I sure hope there will be some sewing.

Sharon's Latest Finish

Sewing with Sharon is proving quite rewarding of late. We try to get together every Thursday, and have become quite regular about it in the past few weeks. Besides just catching up with each other, our productivity increases as we feed off each other, and sewing is just plain more enjoyable with a friend. 

 Earlier in the summer we both worked on our stash of Larkspur fabrics. I made up a pattern and named it Larkspur Stars.

Sharon made a strippy quilt that she named Larkspur Lane.

 

 And now, guess what? We are both still have a good amount of leftover Larkspur fabric. It is an absolute shame to leave it boxed up in a closet or drawer. Sharon got busy right away and began a second Larkspur quilt. 

She had saved back a layer cake of Larkspur. She set aside the cuts of the fabric with the birds to use as setting blocks for this quilt she has named Lark Meadow. It is so simple; so sweet; so striking. And it went together fast. All the best of quilt-making, if you ask me.

Now, I have to do something with my leftover Larkspur, right? My original quilt had a lot of 3.5-inch squares, and I was left with several. Rather than to let those go to waste, I am now in the process of making 9-patches with those. It won't take many of those 9.5-inch blocks to make a quilt, so I am rather amped up to finish them. I have a couple of neutral/light pieces of yardage which will do nicely for setting blocks.

The plan is to show you a finish later this week!

Another Larkspur Reveal

The fun we have had using our Larkspur stashes! Sharon finished up her strippy 9-patch quilt on Thursday with incredible success. It is a gorgeous quilt!

Sharon is calling this quilt Larkspur Lane, based on a book of one of her favorite childhood book characters, Nancy Drew. I was never a Nancy Drew reader, but Sharon says she read them all, and collected many of them. She remembers one book in particular with Larkspur in the title.

What a great name for this quilt, wouldn't you agree? And a special connection makes it perfect. Now, let's see more pictures.

The goal was to make Larkspur quilts in June, and we are both done by mid-month. We are thrilled with our flimsies! And guess what?  We both  have remnants calling to be used. What will we do with those?! Stay tuned; we are likely to come up with something.

Sewing With Sharon

Last Thursday when Sharon was here to sew, I finally had the wherewithal to take some pictures of her Larkspur quilt.

As you may recall, we agreed to dedicate June to making quilts using our Larkspur stashes. Larkspur is the name of a line of Moda fabric released about 4 years ago by 3Sisters. We bought our fabrics independent of each other, and from that happy coincidence, we are making Larkspur quilts this month. We must have really been eager to do this because we are barely into June and mine is made, and Sharon's is nearly made.

And they are so pretty! Click here to see mine. Below are some shots of Sharon's quilt. It will be 9-patches on point in a strippy setting.

Like me, Sharon is limited in her fabric color choices, but is satisfied to use the yardage she has. We did share pieces; I needed some blue/green from her; I believe she is using gray and/or white from me.

All Sharon's pieced strips are made. The next step will be to cut the long plain strips out of the coral floral shown in the photos above. Then she will very likely have this top constructed this week! We plan to sew together here on Thursday. And of course, I will take pictures!

Larkspur Stars

Sewing with Sharon yesterday was productive!

We agreed several weeks ago to assign June as our month to work with our Larkspur stashes. It's just such a shame to keep gorgeous fabric locked up in bins.

From the looks of things, we will have to make a new assignment for June, because both of us have a good head start and are on a course for finishing our quilt tops very soon.

For my Larkspur Stars quilt, I have made 15 setting blocks and 8 stars. My current plan is to make 7 more stars, then see what fabrics I have remaining. Should there be enough to do one more row, I will do that for sure. Actually, my concern is the variety of the remaining fabric, not the amount. I am pretty sure that plenty will be available, but I doubt there will be nothing but yellow and coral left. So, we shall see.

Sharon is making 9-patch blocks which she intends to set in strippy columns. I love strippy quilts, and the colors along with the various florals of Larkspur will be beautiful set this way. I have no pictures of Sharon's blocks, but I have made some strippy quilts, which I can show you to get an idea. I will do a better job of taking some pictures of her work next week.

Using our Larkspur collections has been lots of fun. We are sharing as needed to help each other out when we are lacking in a particular color-range. Sharon suggested that I look at other 3Sisters fabrics for possible substitutes. Good idea! I am using some of the red from Roman Holiday. What a fun addition to my quilt!

It's Friday! Are you all finding that you are returning to "normal" as we approach June? My group of card-playing friends met last night and did an adequate job of socially distancing. We didn't have enough to play cards, so we sat on the screened porch and talked until almost midnight. We had a lot of catching up to do.

Larkspur Progress

I use the word 'progress' in the title, yet evidence of that has been of the s-l-o-w variety. With our Ohio weather finally acting like it should - sunshine and warmth! - I have been focusing on flowers and yards and porches and all other manner of outdoor endeavors.

I have tried to make myself do 2 blocks per day this week - not entirely successful with that goal, but at least it's an effort. So far I have these 9 blocks made and two more that aren't in the picture. My original plan was to make a bed-sized quilt, but I am wary of committing to that due to lack of fabric variety, so I will work toward a lap-quilt and then re-assess the situation.

Sharon is coming later today. I hope to be able to share a good bit more progress after a full day of stitching.
