Retail Therapy!

It has been a long, long time since I have shopped for fabric. I have been holding onto a gift certificate that DH gave me as a Christmas gift to Old Town Fabrics; yesterday (Friday) seems like a good day to cash it in!

With all the snow we have had this week, and with more falling today, buying a fabric called 'Snowbird' seems fitting. A specific purpose has already been established for this lovely yardage. Sharon P. and I have agreed that we'd both use our Snowbird fabric to make the same quilt - Confetti Stars by Thimbleberries. This is the same pattern that all of our retirement quilts have been made from, so we know it well.

Sharon plans to make her quilt very scrappy, with lots of polka dots. My version will be more orderly, with more florals. Referring to the picture, the navy floral is what I will use as my border. The small-print neutral will be the background for my star blocks. The light blue floral will be the setting triangles, and the beige floral will be the backing. The remaining parts - the stars and the setting squares - will be made with the stash I already had on hand, which I purchased last June after quilt camp.

Our finish date for Snowbird Stars is the end of March. I will definitely share our finishes here. It will be fun to see the differences in our approach to this pattern.

Sharon's Snowbird Progress

This Monday sewing thing with Sharon is going to pay off big dividends, I can tell already! She has the center portion of a quilt finished already, and is pondering border options!

This is what one gets out of 2 Charm Packs. It won't be a humongous quilt, but it will make a wonderful quilt for wrapping up on cold days with a book or a good movie.

This will be the border. She did this on Monday, and I had a text from Sharon yesterday that she went to Old Town Fabrics, purchased the border fabrics and has them on! I told you this was paying off big dividends!! Way to go, Sharon!

Now, lest you think that's all she's done, get a look at this.

Several years ago, Sharon made a couple of quilts with snowball and 9-patch blocks. There were these leftover 9-patches, so she whipped up a wall-hanging, has it sandwiched, and is ready to quilt it. She actually started quilting it while here with me on Monday. That same text message yesterday informed me that she had it finished and was ready to start the binding. Whoo-hoo! She has certainly found her motivation!

Snowbird Fabric

One of the biggest hits at quilt camp was the fabric Pat was using in her quilt. Almost every camper stopped by her work space to ogle the gorgeous Snowbird by Moda. In the star block below, there is a pinkish cast to the neutral, which is NOT true - the colors are very pleasing, with no pinkishness at all.

By the end of the week at least 3 of us had visited the cutting table downstairs to get some of our own Snowbird fabric!

Sharon bought 2 Charm Packs and worked on sewing these together last Monday when she was here to sew.

The lighting is rather horrible, but you can see that she is simply chain piecing the charm squares. Nothing fancy; just FAST!

I bought 6 half-yard cuts - and no, I  have no plan for how to use them. But I sure didn't want to miss the chance to have some, either! It was a deliberate decision - I pondered it all week! It only totals up to 3 yards, so I have to consider my options carefully. I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to returning to the shop to buy a bit more, and I probably should have, but I was trying to remain true to my pledge to use from the stash. (Sometimes, that grows tiring, you know?)
