CHAMPIONS!!

 No quilting today, folks. I'm celebrating!

 It's been a fun ride and we came out victorious! THE Ohio State Buckeyes are NATIONAL CHAMPS!

We were with them all the way, even when we suffered two heartbreaking defeats. But by gosh we have come out on top!

Forgive me for raving over football, but in Ohio this is normal. We love our Buckeyes.

Back tomorrow with proper quilting news. We've got more celebrating to do!

More Remnants; Another Baby Quilt

The posts to this blog of late have had a certain theme going through them, have you noticed? I've suddenly been tidying up remnants of previously made quilts and I've had a few baby quilts to make. Here's the latest from my sewing machine.

Ohio State remnants from a lap quilt I made for my mother at Christmastime have now been put to use in a baby quilt.

This new baby is already past 2 months of age; I figure I'd best be getting his quilt made and delivered. (I've never been one to get things done in advance, sadly.) I spent a good while considering what sort of pattern I would create from the remnants, and I've arrived at chevrons.

All day yesterday, while sewing at Terry's I made the units/blocks - 6" squares and laid them out on Terry's bed in a straight set. At the time this satisfied me. But this morning, I have had a new thought: chevrons. I did a chevron layout on an earlier baby quilt (click here to see it). I like the on point layout better than a straight set. Above, I have the chevrons crossing the bed lengthwise. I then moved around some blocks so that the chevrons would cross the quilt width-wise.

This width-wise setting will be what I end up doing. I need to make a few more blocks. (And, yes, I did see that one misplaced block.) The side triangles will be gray. I have several wide pieces of the OSU fabric for a nice, strong border. The back will be the same flannel that I used on Mom's quilt. (click here to see)

I am well on my way to finishing off the baby quilt. Maybe by the weekend I can be done with the top. Then this, too, will be need to be quilted and I intend to do it myself with 505 Spray Baste. (I know this stuff is going to be a huge game-changer for me!) Stay tuned to see all that. I've ordered the spray baste, so will stay busy with other things while waiting for it to arrive.

O-H . . . I-O! Score!

I suppose most who read this blog know that I am in Ohio and in these parts we root for our Ohio State Buckeyes. For those who are not in the know about Ohio State, one of our favorite things to do is spell out O-H-I-O. Yeah, that's odd, but here's what makes it fun - let's say we are in a crowd on game day. A fan can holler out O-H! and sure enough one or 50 or 200 people around will respond with I-O! Tailgaters at the ball games will hear this for hours from every direction.

I have been on vacation in places far, far away, and if I see a tourist wearing an OSU t-shirt or hat, I can say to him/her "O-H" and I will get an "I-O" right back. Buckeyes have a huge fan base, and they are everywhere.

Well, I did not begin typing this post with the idea that I would be offering up a lesson in Buckeye-fandom. I guess you all need to be educated, though, even if you might root for some other team. *wink*

The reason I am on a Buckeye kick is this fantastic fabric I bought yesterday at JoAnn Fabrics in Chillicothe.

I needed to find a backing for the baby quilt I made earlier this month out of Ohio State fabric. I want to get started quilting it, so a backing had to be located. I wandered around and considered many options, but when I saw this flannel plaid, I knew I'd found the perfect backing for the quilt. A baby quilt with a flannel back is exactly the right way to go with this. And this particular fabric is a very soft flannel, not like some that are quite stiff.

Not only is flannel perfect for a baby quilt, a couple of other factors indicate that my choice is spot on. First, the price was right - and got better at the cash register. The sign said it was $8.99/yard. It ended up being on sale and I got it for $5.39/yard. SCORE!! The second SCORE! was discovering that it is 54" wide, not the typical 42" - more yardage for less money! I was really happy. I took the entire bolt of 5.3 yards and paid a whopping $29. Now that is a big win for this Buckeye!

Here's how nicely it goes with my fabric and the quilt top. Seeing this work out so well makes me very eager to get to stitching.

I have cut the backing for the quilt. Next up is to get into the batting. I will likely piece some bits together. I will straight-line machine quilt it on my little Bernina. I think this yet to-be-born Buckeye is gonna have a pretty awesome quilt.

More Ohio State!

The people on Sharon P's Christmas gift list are really lucky people. Here are 2 quilts that she made and gave as gifts. In the spirit of our continued celebrating here in the great state of Ohio, I will share them with you.

Looks like they are already being used and loved, doesn't it? Wonderful. Builds on my sentiments from the previous post - quilts that are loved and used are the best. And the quilter who made those quilts feels a great satisfaction in making the recipient happy. Quilts are great gifts, and Sharon's family has received many over the years. I know a few of my family who would enjoy some quilts like these.

Sweet Sixteen!

I think it is probably a pretty well known fact that we in this house root for our Buckeyes. So we are psyched, pumped, and proud to be in the Sweet Sixteen!!

DH and I breathed a huge sigh of relief when today's game ended with that incredible 3-point shot by Aaron Craft. It was a thing of beauty!

We have the game saved on the dvr, so come on over if you missed it; we will gladly watch it again!!
