Hillsboro Quilt Show

Friday afternoon I took a stroll through the quilt show sponsored by the quilt guild in Hillsboro. The show is held at Hillsboro HS, and boy did they encounter a "situation." At some point mid-morning, the gym floor - just down the hall from the location of the quilt show - was sealed, and the fumes were so strong! Doors were opened, fans were moved in, and yet the odor was still almost overpowering.

But the quilts were pretty, and I took some pictures of a few that caught my eye. I will start with one near the back row. This quilt is made by my cousin Marilyn, whom you have met here before. That link is one of several posts in which she is mentioned. Marilyn is such a talented quilter, and is prolific with applique! This Lori Holt 'Bee Happy' quilt is especially fun and Marilyn's work is neat as a pin, precise as can be.

This Texas Star quilt caught my eye because I have made one very similar to it. The first one is from the quilt show; the next one is mine. Click here to read about my finish from back in '16.

These next two pictures are the same pattern called In A Pickle. I know this quilt as Jan (of our Frankfort group) made one awhile back. Hers was a kit and made with batiks. I believe these are both batiks, as well. Notice the difference in backgrounds and in quilting styles. I dug around for Jan's version, which is pictured on display at her guild's quilt show.

This last photo is one that simply appealed to me. I think I am still very much enamored with the 9-patch quilt, and these tiny blocks are very, very attractive. And I really love that blue/lavender background.

A highlight of the show was getting to visit with vendors, one of which is Annette Williams, owner of Sewing the Good Life. She is so sweet, and always so friendly. I was glad for the chance to have an extended visit with her. She is quite talented and I love seeing her business growing so much.

Despite the horrible odor, I did enjoy the show, and guess what? There are two more quilt shows near here this summer. I look forward to attending them, too.

Hillsboro Quilt Show

This past weekend, the quilt guild over in Highland County hosted their quilt show at Hillsboro High School. Since Hillsboro is my hometown, and since I want to see their guild thrive and do well, I try to attend each year. The show is a small one, but I do always enjoy seeing the quilts and visiting the vendors.

Do you ever just have "moods?" I think I was in an antique quilt mood on Friday. While I saw several gorgeous quilts on display, for whatever reason I was particularly enamored with the old ones. Here are two that struck my fancy.

This was called a Horn of Plenty applique. I don't believe I have ever seen this pattern before. Very pretty, and look at the amazing quilting. If memory serves, the tag said it was over 150 years old.

This double wedding ring quilt reminded me of several old quilts that my grandmother made. To my knowledge, she never made a double wedding ring, but she did work with these types of fabrics - most likely feed sacks - in so many of her early quilts.

The quilt above is nothing very spectacular, but I really wanted to photograph it because it would be such a simple quilt to recreate - and fast, as the pieces are large. Only 13 star blocks (the intricate work, but not overly so) and large hourglass blocks for setting. I need to start thinking in terms of fast quilts, as I am not making my way through the fabric stash as quickly as I ought to be. Ha!

The quilt above was the first one I saw as I entered the door. My color doesn't do it justice. The deep burgundy red was very striking, and the whole quilt was just very pleasing to the eye. I found the border to be something quite different from the ordinary. Very nice.

Did I mention vendors? Oh, yes, I did make a small purchase. I found these four fat quarters in a shop and listened to them tell me to take them home with me. No purpose in mind, but they will enhance that stash I mentioned earlier.

Sharon is coming today, and we will continue our work on our Roman Holiday quilts. I will bring you pics of that fun stuff tomorrow.

The Hillsboro Quilt Show

Over the weekend, nearby Hillsboro (my home town) had a quilt show sponsored by the local guild. I didn't even know about it until the last minute, and found a bit of time available on Saturday to go have a look-see.

I was majorly (is that an actual word?) disappointed to be prohibited from taking pictures. The guild offered a CD with all the quilts pictured on it for minimal cost - I think $5 or $10 - but, gee whiz, I want to take pics of the ones I most admire and skip the rest. Oh well, I can't have my way all the time, I suppose.

I did see some quilts that were familiar to me, though, and I can pull one of them up from my files to share.

My cousin Marilyn entered her gorgeous applique quilt which I'd seen in April at her local quilt show in Peebles. This quilt continues to leave me in awe of the workmanship; it's just gorgeous from the careful applique to the fantastic custom quilting. It actually won first place in the machine quilting category of the Hillsboro show. Here's the link to the post about the Peebles show.

Not only did I see Marilyn's quilt, I also got to see Marilyn! She was there along with some of her quilting buddies. One of them also won in the small quilt category, so the Adams County group did well in neighboring Highland County.

The other exciting thing to happen from this quilt show is meeting pattern designer and EPP queen, Annette Williams. I stopped by the vendors (of course) and noticed that one particular shop was promoting her patterns. I asked the gentleman in charge some questions about his shop, and went on my merry way. I later came back and asked him if he was affiliated with Annette. Ha! I think he was her husband! He pointed behind me, and there was Annette in person! Wow. What a delight. They have an on-line business out of their home in Jeffersonville, OH, which is just a half hour from me. I had a wonderful chat with her and made a small purchase.

She was gracious enough to pose for a picture in front of a couple of her quilts. She had a little station set up in the booth where she demonstrated her techniques for appliqueing; these were fascinating. I look forward to seeing her again in a couple of weeks at the Circleville show sponsored by Good Time Quilters.

Later on Saturday, while browsing Facebook, I saw that a high school classmate had tagged me. Imagine my surprise when I saw the photo above. Talk about a small world - get this - the woman pictured is Helen Sprinkle, Kathy's 99-year-old mother, with a quilt I definitely remember noticing at the quilt show; it had been voted the People's Choice Award! Here's what Kathy tells me about her mother, "She did those quilts almost 10 years ago...she is so very proud of getting that award." Aww, so sweet! In Kathy's FB post, I learned that Mrs.Sprinkle is no longer quilting, but when she was, she hand-quilted all her quilts. Isn't this great!? And, like so many, Kathy says that she never realized that quilting has been such a fulfilling pastime for her mother. I suspect that many could make that same statement.

Here in my quilting room, I am very nearly finished with the first of two t-shirt quilts I agreed to make and should have a finish to show you tomorrow.
