UFO Show - Part Two

I promised in the previous post to share with you the UFOs that Terry finished in 2014 as part of our UFO Challenge. She was the winner of the challenge, no doubt. This output will impress you, I'm sure. Let us begin.

I love the block in this quilt, and Terry said it is called the Cannonball. Blame the photographer (me) for not taking a better picture. You do see the entire center, though. I cut off the left and bottom borders, unfortunately. This would be a throw quilt, or one to drape over a small table.

This little patriotic wall hanging was another of Terry's finishes. It will find a spot to live come summer time and the 4th of July.

This very pretty brown and pink wall hanging is now finished. Don't you just love bow-tie quilts?

What a great quilt this is! I love the strong black chain that runs through it, and how the border is interrupted to complete the chain.

This sampler applique is ready for summer. The combination of the pieced flying geese, checkerboard and sawtooth borders along with the applique blocks looks very nice. It never occurs to me to make quilts like this for myself, but I always love the look when I see them made by others. I think one needs lots of wall space for displaying these wall hangings, and my house isn't as well-suited to them as Terry's is. Notice the pieced border, also. Very nice.

And, Terry had a second combination pieced and appliqued wall hanging. This one has more of a feel of autumn, with all its fall colors and homespun plaids.

Are you impressed yet with all of Terry's finishes? The best is yet to come. But first, have a look at this marvelous Churn Dash and Basket quilt. I have always loved the Churn Dash block. These big chunky ones look fantastic.

The grand finale is worth waiting for. The picture above is the back - Terry used a Farmall Tractor fabric in brown and cream. It is quite fitting.

Do you recognize it? It's the Farmer's Wife quilt! I was so excited to see it. What a fantastic, gorgeous accomplishment.

What a labor of love this is. I should have asked Terry if we could photograph it on her bed. These snapshots just don't do it proper justice. But for those of you who know this quilt, this is definitely an accomplishment. I have about 30 of my blocks finished. I believe Terry said she has 120 in this one. Gracious! This is an heirloom, to be sure.

That concludes the UFO Show. My paltry finishes somehow don't seem to measure up, do they? I guess I will take satisfaction in having a few things done, though, and will work to do a few more in this new year's challenge.

Frankfort Girls UFO Show

Friday morning 4 out of the 5 Frankfort Girls met at Terry's for coffee, some yummy cinnamon cake and catching up. The holidays wreaked havoc on our last few scheduled meetings, so we really had to cover a lot of material! We stayed an extra half hour and we were still going strong.

The most important item on the to-do list was to review some of our completed UFOs from the 2014 challenge. I have quilts to show you from Sheryll and Terry. I think I will break them up into 2 posts; today's will feature Sheryll's.

This Santa wall hanging has a unique feature at the bottom. The candle is extended below the border line. "Outside the box," if you will. Very nice. And isn't her crosshatch quilting nicely done? I just love it.

This is another wall hanging. I don't know why Sheryll delayed finishing this one. It's beautiful! And when you see the back, it's just as gorgeous.

This final picture is all I have of a pineapple wall hanging. There are 9 pineapples in all, and each one is hand embroidered with little beads added for detail. It looks great, and I wish I could show you the entire piece. It will look great in Sheryll's house.

I mentioned that 4 of us were present. One of our group, JoAnn, is in Florida. The lucky girl! She sent us this after texting with her. (Ah, the wonders of the techno world in which we live!) She said it is the view on her morning walk.

There's no walking here in Ohio! Our view looks like this.

Quite a difference, wouldn't you say? We are hovering around the single digits in temperature. We were out last night, and the car thermometer read 8 degrees. Brrrrrr.

Tomorrow I will show you some of Terry's completed UFOs. She won the prize for the year-long challenge. I venture to say you will be impressed with her output!

Sharing One's Talents

Thursday evening I was given an opportunity to teach quilting to a group of women I belong to. It is a service organization/sorority-type club, and each meeting has a "program." For yesterday's meeting, quilting was the program. Awesome, right?

I decided awhile ago that I would focus on the 9-patch block, one of the most basic quilt blocks of all. I cut a gazillion 2.5" squares, threaded a bunch of needles, and had each woman stitch a block of her own. I had plenty of samples to share, and sewed one along with them, to illustrate various things. It was lots of fun. Most of them seemed interested, and were excellent students. We had several with finished blocks that looks quite nice.

In addition to having many sample 9-patch blocks, I also took some quilt tops that feature this block so that they could see the variety of ways it can be set into a quilt. Look at the easel: the top 3 show the 9-patch in 3 different sizes. I talked about the five spaces and the four spaces. I pointed out in the largest block that the center space could be made of a third color.

The rest of the blocks on the easel are all made with 2.5-inch squares. I talked about low contrast; I have one up there that is totally random; and I have one there that is made with light 5-spaces and dark 4-spaces. So they had a good variety to consider.

On the table, I had a quilt top that features the 9-patch. It is a Thimbleberries pattern, in case you are wondering. Spread out on the table are all the 2.5-inch squares that I prepped for the meeting. There was wayyyy more than we needed, but I wanted to offer as much variety as possible.

On the tables behind these ladies are more quilt tops. All sizes; all types; a wide variety. Don't these gals look intent? Of course, some took to it right off, finishing quickly, while others had issues and took a bit more time. Most everyone did finish their blocks, though. Here are a couple of finishes.

And a few provided pictures of what they did with their blocks after they went home. These are some clever ladies!

It was fun teaching quilting to these ladies. We had a lot of laughs, and I think there are more than a couple that would like to continue quilting. Wouldn't that be lovely?

I have to show you one "oops" that we had along the way; have no fear - we had it corrected before it went home!

Funny Suff

Today I've played nursemaid for my mother who had cataract surgery early this morning. The patient is doing well, and we are looking forward to a check up visit tomorrow to learn how well everything is progressing.

Because I've had a lot of time on my hands, I've been on Pinterest a lot. I found this little bit of humor that seemed fitting for me as I've recently been finishing so many UFOs.

Hope you've had a good day!

UFOs Bite the Dust

This UFO has been finished for a long time - since Veterans' Day, actually. I finished it on the day we all sewed at Sherrie's. I just haven't taken the opportunity to photograph it and show it to you all. You can tell that it's been folded up for awhile. I should have pressed it for it's blog debut, but ehh, well...

This UFO is quite old. If I had to fathom a guess, I'd say between 15-20 years old. I was crazy about paper-piecing when it first came on the scene. These blocks are made using that method. Mostly, I was just playing around with scraps and I got carried away. I got it back out about a year ago, and made a few more blocks so I'd have enough for a nice throw, and then I sewed the top together. When I put the border on, I was really lazy, and didn't measure like I should have. The resulting borders were so wavy that they just looked hideous. So I put it away again. (My M-O.)

For the UFO Challenge, my goal was to remove the offending borders, measure correctly, and reattach. Easy stuff. I did that and now I'm happy.

So the items on the UFO list continue to be checked off. Bit by bit, I am getting it whittled down. Nice.

Another UFO Completed

Hey! How about those Buckeyes?!!!!

We are pretty happy here in Buckeye Nation. That win last night against Alabama was sweet! One to go! For a championship!

During the game, I stitched these two pillows. This counts as just one item on the UFO list, and if I think about it too long, I'm embarrassed that I took so long in finishing them. I mean, really, 2 pillows? Shouldn't have even been cluttering up my workspace. Such simple stuff.

So, I'm off today to the Historical Society. That's right. We are still writing. I hope today is the last day. The dust jacket text and corrections are the agenda items today. I have enjoyed this project, but I will be glad to have it finished!

Wecome to 2015!

Most folks have already made their welcome to 2015 announcements, but even if it is 2pm on January 1st, I still want to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year.

Did you celebrate?
Do you have a hangover this morning?
Or did you sleep through the midnight hour?

My answers to those questions are: yes, no, no. For 20 years now, my DH and I have shared New Years with two other couples - The Everharts and The Schmidts. Back in those early days, we had our kids in attendance - 7 all total. Now the kids all make their own New Year's plans, which do not include parents! So we 6 trade off hosting duties and enjoy ringing in the New Year with food, a bit of bubbly, games, and most importantly, fellowship.

So, while I wait until 8:30pm and a Very Important Football Game, I will be finalizing my quilting goals for 2015. The pork and saurkraut are prepped and cooking. I have had my 2 cups of coffee. I am ready to take on this new year!

Go Buckeyes!
